Clearing and foundation work has begun on the 6th St Active Transportation bridge in downtown Courtenay. This project has been a dream and a political football for over a decade. As many of you know, the Cycling Coalition has expressed both support and concerns in the past and we have engaged in the conversation as best we could.
Now that the decision has been made to proceed and construction is underway, we are excited for the possibilities that this bridge will create. We believe that this will be an important element in a future downtown core that is more pedestrian friendly and welcoming with each passing year.

There are many voices of concern about the cost of this project and whether it is the best use of precious city funds. Many may not be aware that 2/3rd of the cost is covered by external sources and the debt incurred by the city represents less than the price of 1 hamburger per citizen per year.
This bridge is part of an evolving network of safe routes for cyclists and walkers in the Comox Valley. Lets continue to keep our valley a healthful, safe and beautiful place to live.
