The new active transportation bridge over the Courtenay river officially opened on Friday June 26. A good sized crowd was on hand to hear mayor Bob Wells describe the history, benefits and wider context of this facility. He noted that this bridge is part of a larger effort to make Courtenay more accessible to walkers, cyclists and people with mobility issues.
The Cycling Coalition is continually engaged with the city on improving comfort and safety for cyclists and pedestrians when navigating the city. The next big challenge is creating a safe route from Simms Park to destinations in East Courtenay. The intersection of Ryan Rd and Hwy 19A is a particular challenge and we are in discussion on alternatives.
