Comox has successfully secured a $375,000-grant from the province to set against the cost of constructing cycling lanes on Comox Avenue hill, Mayor Paul Ives announced Wednesday.
Town staff had applied for the grant at the beginning of the new year. Ida Chong, minister of community, sport and cultural development, confirmed approval for the grant in a Jun. 8 letter to Ives and Comox councillors.
“Our government welcomes the opportunity to support your efforts in addressing important issues such as climate change and the overall health, sustainability and liveability of the Town of Comox,” Chong says in the letter.
Ives thanked Comox Valley MLA Don McRae for supporting the application, as well as town staff for preparing and submitting the paperwork. Ives also credited councillors for supporting the project, which is currently under construction.
